Sonya Irabor – Mr. Swagger
Nov 6th, 2009 by Danielson
Sonya ‘La-La’ Irabor is a young, aspiring singer/songwriter with a lot of optimism to keep her going. Aged 5, her parents realised, she could hold a tune and that her voice had a lot of potential from then on performing was second nature. At the age of 14, Sonya began taking music a bit more seriously with her first big performance in front of hundreds of honourable guests at a charity event in her hometown Lagos, Nigeria!
Her musical influences though diverse, have one thing in common… tons of personality on stage. These influences which include; Outkast, Janelle Monae, Alicia Keys, Lauryn Hill, Aaliyah, recently Melanie Fiona, are part of an evergrowing list. She finds herself influenced by not only the talent but the character these and many other performers possess which she says is what she hoopes to convey through her music and her performances as she grows.
Sonya describes her sound as funk/pop/soul. Her new track Mr. Swagger definitely has that old school funk vibe to it but then blended with that new school soul/pop feel too. Her style she says, is very much HER- retro, soulful, funky, sexy and fun.
